About the Event

The purpose of the Neural Information Processing Systems meeting was to foster the exchange of research on neural information processing systems in their biological, technological, mathematical, and theoretical aspects. The core focus was peer-reviewed novel research which is presented and discussed in the general session, along with invited talks by leaders in their field.

Massimiliano Patacchiola

Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Cambridge
I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge, Machine Learning Group, working with prof. Richard Turner and Microsoft Research on efficient learning for real-world applications. Before I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Bayesian and Neural Systems group at the University of Edinburgh with prof. Amos Storkey. I obtained a PhD in machine learning and robotics from Plymouth University with prof. Angelo Cangelosi and prof. Giorgio Metta. I have been an intern at Snapchat under the supervision of dr. Edward Rosten. Previously I worked in industry as a robotics engineer for more than three years and contributed to develop the autonomous capabilities of several unmanned systems. I am currently interested in developing efficient and effective deep learning methods, with a focus on few-shot learning, self-supervised learning, and Bayesian methods.

Ines Chami

Ph.D. Candidate at Stanford University
I am Ph.D. candidate in the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME) at Stanford University. Prior to attending Stanford, I studied Mathematics and Computer Science at Ecole Centrale Paris.

My research interests include Machine Learning Theory, Deep Learning and Representation Learning for non-Euclidean data such as graphs or manifolds. I am excited by applications in Computer Vision and NLP tasks and my previous research was focused on cross-modal information retrieval (image annotation and automated text-illustration).

Vinodkumar Prabhakaran

Research Scientist at Google
I am a Research Scientist at Google, working on issues around Ethical AI and ML Fairness. Prior to this, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Computer Science department at Stanford University, where I worked with Prof. Dan Jurafsky and others at the Stanford NLP group, in an array of projects with a focus on applying Artificial Intelligence for Social Good. I bring together natural language processing techniques, machine learning algorithms, and social science methods to build scalable ways to identify and address large-scale societal issues such as racial disparities in policing, workplace incivility, gender bias and stereotypes, and abusive behavior online. To this end, I collaborate with researchers in Machine Learning and NLP, as well as social scientists and practitioners from Linguistics, Psychology, Education, and Journalism.
