A few years ago, I stumbled across Blender when I was searching for a tool for pure visualization of 3D data from medical imaging. But I quickly found that it can offer much more than that for specific medical tasks: With its Python API and the fully customizable GUI, I learned to adapt Blender to my very specific needs that I had when I was working as an engineer at University Hospitals. There, I was developing special workflows to evaluate 3D data e.g. from surface scans or CT. During the last years I used Blender in various research projects from different medical fields, including Plastic Surgery, Orthopedics, Dentistry or Face Reconstruction Surgery and it became the actual back-bone of these projects, keeping together the different aspects of the projects, such as mechanical simulation or even the use of artificial intelligence. During my talk I will show various examples of how Blender was integrated in the process chain of different medical research projects.
