About speakers
Professor Klaus Schwab was born in Ravensburg, Germany in 1938. He is Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. He founded the Forum in 1971, the same year in which he published Moderne Unternehmensführung im Maschinenbau (Modern Enterprise Management in Mechanical Engineering). In that book, he argued that the management of a modern enterprise must serve not only shareholders but all stakeholders (die Interessenten), to achieve long-term growth and prosperity. Schwab has championed the multistakeholder concept since the Forum’s inception, and it has become the world’s foremost platform for public and private cooperation. Under his leadership, the Forum has been a driver for reconciliation efforts in different parts of the world, acting as a catalyst of numerous collaborations and international initiatives. I'm delighted to introduce a Stella panel with joined by the deputy secretary-general of the United Nations Amina Mohammed. We are joined by the founder and executive chairman of the world economic Forum Professor Klaus Schwab, the global Chief Executive Officer of deloitte's

Thank you very much. Ends in the room. Welcome. This is pretty this is going to be really exciting and I've been waiting for this since the professor 12 told me about it in South Africa a few weeks ago. It's been 4 years since we have the groundbreaking adoption of the sdgs and a few meters away right here and I'll hold so this really is for us a memorable. Stop taking event as well as we look up what we're both sitting still also the goals the past two days we've gathered again to take stock of the sdgs and although we know
we're not where we ought to be. We are. In fact track with some of the more tragic news of global hunger been on the rise. Just when we thought that we had been able to do something about it and almost half a billion people remaining in extreme poverty by 2033. Somehow change the way that we are addressing some of these issues to get back on track. We've also heard as we had the climb the climate change Summit the greenhouse gas emissions, Steering to increase just relaxation that's really inclusive will need technology
technology. So Advanced rscg, and to meet the needs of a changing world, but they're also risks on the horizon and that must be navigated perfectly around labor this location and exacerbation of existing at inequalities already seen that many new technologies and services based on all social intelligence. Mainly benefit those who have the most leaving behind many who already worse off than even putting them at more risk with this in mind is SG and I both Echo the call from the UN high-level panel on digital Corporation innovations
that have people scented and aligned with the refugees. So it's heartening to see that many young entrepreneur is already finding new solutions to help address to Wells increasingly complex challenges going Beyond borders Into Summer. Exacerbating situations we have with conflict migration and climate change. Indeed the walls of new shortage of creative ideas and facts in the last week. Its young people have no option but they we still lack Pathways that would enable us go to scale and they would include using a really meaningful
way as we scale out the value of Transformers that connects companies and citizens young entrepreneurs and Technical college students in Venture firms universities. If not greater than ever does a huge momentum and a deep search for it initiatives Global compact SUV Innovative program fax next-gen and now Uplink are particularly critical to support Innovations, the sdgs including leveraging our youth initiative in the private sector investment that we need so much with an initial pilot of a plane to be ready in time for the United Nations Ocean
song Clinton 2020. Your initiative has a huge opportunity to support young people's engagement and it has been everybody speaks to the call the ocean called nature-based Solutions a lot of excitement around this more than a thousand four hundred volume three commitments on Ocean action that if he made sense 2017 conference sepultus. We will need more initiatives like this. But today let's just celebrate that this is happening in g a week to give us greater inspiration to do the things that we need to do at scale more in local areas, and in the in people's
lives, typically the young ones. We look forward to that reality something yesterday. Thank you. 72nd General thank you very much now channels to hear from fresa Klaus Schwab The Foundry executive chairman of the world and wait for him. WWE secretary-general proust I want to express our appreciation for the trust you are giving us. Under-seat confidence. We all have San Francisco checked we can make a real significant contribution with having two objects in mind. We have seen this week multifoliate
activities to sell multiple initiatives answer question comes up. How can we integrate all those initiatives? How can we create a factor of aggregation at amplification and acceleration but second as you mentioned, how can we integrate also seeing people with great ideas startups? Innovative universities and Swan. How can we create the mass movement? So support checked we sent today and I want to thank our technology Partners support check retriever sent today has actually as an objective
to be an instrument for Mass integration for Route engagement Nation. It integrates the missing Dimension invisible key stakeholder concept of people underground who have great ideas who would like to be not only enthusiastic but to be co-owners to be cool operators in serialization of sustainable development goals To build such a platform and it will be operational first racially diverse next year and send the next to you to mpk form for all z s o s t cheese. Thank you and I can tell you is a whole history of Sephora, which is celebrating its 50th year
next in 2020. I never felt so excited and I never was engaged so much into a project like this one. Thank you very much. I'm bringing this this initiative to life and tearing. It is one of which is Deloitte and looking between 5 and it rained Jen who's the chief executive officer? 50 sector General a professor closet as you said, it's really exciting to be here with you on this project. And the Lord is very honored to collaborate with you. The Lord believes is an organization that business exists to do more than just doing a profit. In fact, we believe passionately
passionately that business is a force of good and everyday 300,000 Deloitte professionals do that in two ways. They uphold the public trust and they contribute their skills and capabilities to try and address some of the most difficult type O and client issues a number of lessons along the way one of the key lesson. So we've learned a particularly in recent times has that we can't do this alone. That is why a project like this is so important and a great example of that in terms of collaborating
connecting for impact. The work that we do for the UN, we've been associated with the UN for about 25 years and we're very proud of it and it is a whole host of project. So we do for the UN both pro bono as well as paid and it has called us the power of collaboration. That's why I'm so excited to be here to collaborate with wash to collaborate with Salesforce sales force has a great partner of ours and also with Microsoft and others to bring this to life as Professor Klaus said this will be a great enabler to get the sdgs to come to fruit has been
said we are committed as an organization to to enable the sdgs to come to fruit, but the path that we are on will take us to 2073. I'll be long retired and you'll be my son's children probably that will take advantage of that such a trying to get it done quickly is where this project comes in is to try and get in one. Technological solution the ability to get entrepreneurs to get individuals working at some of the most vexing problems in society together to address them in a collaborative way. The Lord is honored to be part of
this team, and I look forward to getting this to to done by West Inn in January of this year. Thank you. Thank you for helping to make this happened Salesforce. Very glad to be joined by Mark Wilkins the Chief Financial Officer at thank you, Mom. It's such a pleasure here. I should be here today and talk on this very very important and exciting topic. I Deputy secretary-general Professor Bernie. It's an honor to be on stage with you and to talk on a topic. I have tremendous passion for as does a Salesforce in one of the things I have
to say. It's salesforce's we've always believed that business is one of the greatest platforms for change that's always been at the beginning in the root of our thoughts of our company. And this is a great opportunity today to begin this continued partnership and that way the world needs action now not someday but now I am the Business Leaders we have we have this responsibility to the Future to really take action and make traction and help reshape and and rethink things in a way that will be more sustainable were excited to be a part of that and we're honored to be a part of that as
well. I must say sales forces of you at the environment is a key stakeholder from the very beginning and we focused on creating a low-carbon future. Breville low-carbon product with a low-carbon orientation in this is one more opportunity to contribute in partner in a way. That is so critical example. We just an ounce of sustainability Cloud to help in another way where we bring technology to really help solve this this equation and it's incredibly important topic. I want to say that we're very aligned with the UK or the overall Uplink a vision wishes to create a very
globally impactful platform for action and for engagement for really engage in some of the the new leaders the the the new entrepreneurs the new activists. Are there really want to make a powerful difference and really help to address these 17 sdgs. We're very excited about that and to be partnering with them. I was talking to professor and we've thought about how engagement is so important we had the opportunity to engage but we've gone from an exclusive engagement with this capability to really an inclusive engagement around the world at a glow Global stage level and so that's
super super exciting. I guess it's a chance all of us to activate not just to contemplate but to activate in terms of making progress on these critical critical functionalities. So that is one of the things that I think is really really important. I also want to address a couple other comments people ask like how does this fit into our strategy at Salesforce? Well, the answer is sustainability and sdg topics have always been a part of our mindset as a company from the answer to the company in some form or another and this just feels so align your strategies a company and so we're
very very excited to help on that. We spoke up link to help us make tangible progress. I am really clearing Roblox. I'd have been out there in terms of the ability to achieve these sdg goals and I was think about this the UN has put forward this amazing Vision with these sdg goals and division is part way there but I think a pathway to division is when you really make traction and I feel like Uplink is part of that pathway and I think that's exciting from my standpoint. So at the end of the day, We think about this opportunity to partner we think about you know, how we can
support and what we can do because I I've been thinking a lot about this in terms of atopica sustainability. I think everybody everywhere can walk out of every room and decide to activate and do something to help with sustainability. This happens to be something that we wanted you and have passion for because it has so much global scale in loveridge and is so exciting and that way but I hope we're all making those choices to get the flywheel of progress going at the rate that we need to incredible inspired to watch this next generation of leaders intrapreneurs and activists really
mobilized to save the world that is powerful. And that's why we're proud to be a partner with the world economic Forum. We're proud to participate in this and to help develop a more inclusive vision of stakeholder engagement and generate impact on these sdgs. We at Salesforce at her leadership team is committed are we have a delicate development team dedicated and that way Uplink mission for cheap in the sdg goals. It's exciting to have this opportunity to help Design This platform that will help Global digital communities scaling and that note. I just like to thank you for being a part of
it. And Upland. Would be helping be happening without the help and collaboration of LinkedIn Microsoft. Very grateful to the presence of cake banking take could you come and join us? She's vice president and lead of Microsoft. Thank you very much. It is a pleasure to be here in Microsoft is really honored to be part of this initiative being launched today. Al partnership with the world economic forum and podnuhs on Uplink represents an incredible opportunity to Microsoft to participate in in Co creating a platform that
can really serve as a catalyst for engaging entrepreneurs around the world Community leaders and most importantly the next generation of late is too old help build solutions to support the sustainable development goals We are excited to partner with the world economic forum and taught us to bring the full digital capabilities of Microsoft to help expand the global engagement and awareness of the sustainable development goals and solutions. Sustainable development goals represent an effort to create a better and more sustainable future for a soul and this
is something that speaks directly to the mission of Microsoft to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve mall. So we at Microsoft I committed to helping and power countries you and i g n C's and other organizations that are also on the sdgs. We believe in the powerful role that technology can play to transform to transform the world and help create better opportunities in the most sustainable future for a soul-tie. Thanks very much for the opportunity. Glossy, I'd like to
invite on my colleague Dominic way to come and say a few words on behalf of the Forum on the unique aspects of this project. Thank you esteemed panel members audience. How many of you out there are kind of interested in working on those solutions for the sdgs. You kind of got an idea. I think it's going to be pretty good. Very good. Looks like a very good and how many do you think if only I could find a direct connection to those people with power and influence who can really change to Gary cuz my idea could really make something happen out there that we go.
You see that's why it's called up link because it will connect you to those who actually are the movement in charge of these big issues the process STG topics, whether it's food or forests or climate action or indeed the first one that we going to start with oceans oceans has captured the public imagination of many and yet I'm those who have the power in the influence and know all about the problem as you know, you've read lots of reports you seen lots of podcast and Videos and such and I will say things like this is what we need to do to stop illegal fishing. If only we
could do this to make sure the Marine protected areas are properly protected from the sustainable way. Imagine if we could create those as use cases from those who can make those decisions but need Solutions and push them out there globally through the great Partnerships of them just sitting here and you could reply and say this is how you would do it. This is how you would do it in my region. This is how you would do it in my country. Just how you would do it in my neighborhood. The connection is collapsed. Suddenly. You can connect right up to those people who said that is a really
good idea and in this up link network not only all those who have decision-making capabilities. I'm across all of the organisations that we know and love who would love those new ideas. But also people who I'm not so expert about the issue, but do have a lot of money. Which is also a very very interesting and attractive Arena because there's lots of people who have a very strong designed to solve these problems and a fortunate to work in an organization supposed to have created some wealth but need your ideas and how do you get those you kind of round to the ten like this? You
hook to meet people you'll go to conferences imagine a digital platform that can collapse that Gap and allow you to access that's is the vision about Plank and we will be starting with the ocean agenda. We will have a first product to this at our annual meeting in Davos. If you want to go to the June ocean Summit which United Nations is putting on in Lisbon be there with your ideas because that is where the full version for ocean will be launched and about this time next year. We hope to have five or six other sdgs up and running. So if this tent exists this
time next year sdg action, We will be delighted to kind of see how far we get with this project. I thank you very much indeed and thank you for all of the great pain is on the panel and with very very excited about how this can opener and the networks and delivering Solutions and effort of you and many others. You can't even be here in New York today. Thank you. Wake we started the light. We have a very very brief window for questions on a Friday. So lost of hands go up when Dominic
Australia ideas for what they'd like to see from Upland. One of those hands was from someone. I recognized melati wijsen who was also the coach are the water coming forums sustainable development impact Summit earlier this week Los Angeles a youth activists Network. I mean to ban plastic bags. Can you tell us what you'd like to see from uplink? Hi everyone. My name is malatium 18 years old and I had the honor of being one of the coaches at the world economic Farms events and the past two days but also for the last six years I've worked on banning single-use plastic bags in Bali and finally
this month this summer. We saw the band come into play. So I'm very excited to see up link up and coming but I think also one of the key things here is I'm with our next project Utopia. You don't really see how we can Empower young people further having access to a platform like toppling Uplink would be super helpful because it opens doors to a larger network but also Financial opportunities and also allows us to tap into this unplugged wealth of knowledge. So I think that's my 3:00 of expectations, especially living in a world where you know, it's becoming smaller with
Wi-Fi and smartphone accesses. But the urgency for Action is happening at a much faster rate. And so there is a huge need or we need to connect the dots and Young people when we are at the Forefront can really have this incredible momentum to create change happening. I think what my take away and my last comment would be it's been mentioned Professor Schwab you set it as well this platform. I really think needs to be done not for us, but with us, and I think that that's where you can count me and you still Pia and the younger generation to really be the first ones to sign up and
partner and collaborate as best as we can. Thank you. I'm looking at my watch and seeing that the time has come to return the room to the UN STG folks. I'm very sorry to cut people off if they had opportunities to ask questions. I know each of our finalists will want to speak to you individually if they're able after this panel, but I have you join me in thanking all of them for introducing Uplink and is excited as we are about the opportunity to see it in action in Davos next year
and then at the oceans Summit in June, so please join me in thanking all about finalist, and I hope you get a chance to follow up with an H individually after this session. Thank you very much.
