About the talk

In this session, we will review the design considerations and different strategies for implementing Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops and Citrix Gateway for use cases such as public cloud, hybrid, and on-premises deployments. We will review the benefits of Citrix Cloud services and how organizations can start with a small environment and quickly implement it. We will review a real-world Citrix Cloud deployment that grew from 1,000 to 8,000 seats in just six months.Note: This session will be live-streamed during the event and available for on-demand viewing post-event on Citrix Synergy TV.

Good afternoon, almost 2 and I'm getting the sign that we should go get him started here soon. Soon everybody. Welcome to Synergy. Hopefully everybody had a good lunch lunch with finishing my presentation to be quite honest. So what we have learned in implementing Citrix Cloud app from desktop services. So before we start hopefully there you go. If you guys are those are the hashtags that we use for the session in case you guys want to eat anything out a

little bit about me. They said my name is Riley the end-user Computing practice around Tower around Tower is a stupid farting out of Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm being in the United States since 2004 the cost or so. I've been living Citrix actually since the year 2000 with wooden frame and metal frame XP. I've seen the good Suboxone the ugliest fellow CTP of the house. So what are we going to talk about? I want to I want to talk about what you can expect and what you going to see so you've after we go through that you don't really care about the

station, you know, I'm sorry to see you go, but I want to make sure that everybody has the same expectations are very quick review of citrus clouds just to make sure that the we're all on the same page and level set. Is anybody not seeing not touched if you're still out before Okay, perfect. We got to be joking about licensing because that's one of the things that I say consultant we get the most when we're doing serious cloud project. So I'm going to spend a few time 2-minutes on that. Then we're going to go over to use cases actually real projects that we have done

for customers would not going to use the customers names but you will see some of the designs are are actually you know, coffee face of what we detour when we receive from them and finally what to be aware of so things to do during our implementation with so we fail we fix that I don't think there's anybody perfect so it's okay to fail. So we're not going to see any Game of Thrones jokes here. I don't like a show and never seen a single episode. So that's not coming the first thing that we going to make sure it's not a sales pitch. So we're not going to talk about features

when I going to talk about, you know, if you should do it or not. We're not going to you might not agree with what I'm saying. That's okay. We can talk after day the presentation and try to understand why you don't agree with it. We sharing our experience so your experience might be different if you have implemented it before there more than one way of doing things and that's okay. They will be something to go topics. I will say I did 200 level not anything bigger than that for the time that we have with us vacations. I don't see anybody walking away is it's pretty good

overview. So we we make the mistakes that we always hate Citrus clock I'm going to do stuff is not one thing right? It's a combination of services that are multiple Services of make the platform when I'm talking to him through our teams. We talked about the platform that the framework because there multiple things now the most common nouns of those is what we called Citrus Rachel apps. On Desktop Service C Watts for short and the good thing is that with most of the services you can pick where you put your work clothes and that's the other

advantage that we have with the surface cloud services. So for this presentation will get them completely focused on that and make sure that we understand the different components. By the way. I'm using just standard pictures. I don't want to I don't like spending time Reinventing images. So those use those that have been on TV websites or Don Felder websites. You will see a lot of those pictures as well. So from that perspective right citizens abandoned things into what they manage and I'm saying management reports because not everything is Manish is hosted by them. It

has some level of management but there is still a lot of management that will be our manager that we are responsible for. So on the tough part is what Citrix manage so it makes you know, we make all these things are managed by Centre the part that is not manage. My cervix is still my responsibility to create the delivery groups on the console policies that is sit on the control plane, but it's still my responsibility to go through that. Now the bottom part when we called the resort location is where my resources are

running and we're going to go when we go through the use cases. We going to go different scenarios that we haven't used for customers. Now as you can see on the top part there is the workspace configuration. There are get Who is the artist or fronts but some of those components depending on your needs and we'll go over that might be in the bottom section? Anthem they will be pros and cons of doing that a moving things that are Cloud that was not moving into on premises that are requirements for that. So just to make sure we have the control plane that is hosted by

Citrix monitor my secrets, but we still have responsibilities on and then there's the resource location that we're completely responsible for. That's it just will not have any responsibility. so licensing as on every member of their manufacturer there, there is one those right you got the Burger King that used to come with one or two or three. There's no difference here. When we talked about work spaces, there's three type of work spaces. I'm depending what which ones you picked us officials you get so the biggest work space. Is it

workspace Premium Plus? That gives you everything you know, he gives you the access control at your then point management the content collaboration on the one that probably we who has the most is the bridge collapse in desktops. If you guys are customers that I have concurrent licensing, the only way that you can move or transition to Citrix cloud is my getting premium plus and that's that's one of the things that that you know, we have given some advice or suggest about how difficult my be cuz you might be at send virtual

apps company a Freeman's Bridge collapse company. You don't have some desktop. You don't have to share file. I love you. When I go on continue to have you you might be on Healthcare. You might be in the education and you want to go and continue with your concurrent licensing. You going to have to get everything now, you don't have to use it, but you like it or not. You might be paying for it. Workspace Thunder is just the control plane for Access Control. So very simple very single sign-on of Twilight and then the workspace premium extensions

give you any pain management on continent collaboration AKA Sheriff are so we go from from just single sign-on single URL for wet bathroom and saw us and country or a continent calibration file management. If you look at you know this table, you know, there are there's where you see that the virtual apps on desktop is all the way at the bottom. So that's the only combo that will give you that now this Virtual Lab some desktops you can get it by itself. You don't have to get a workspace premium or workspace standard

type of Bondo to get apps on desktop. The one thing that I do like a lot about the Citrix cloud is the license management that they're there have provided. So this is a screenshot of the Citrix control plane. When you go in to look into the licensing stimulation. So one of our customers they have 8000 licenses. They have a sign at 2 or around 5,000 license its unique users, right? Because when you go with with Rachel apps on desktop is named user name device user each other you also

the last on a monthly basis how many of those have been unique ID tells you on a daily basis how many of those are so unique which also help us to understand? What are my friends? And Eliza's infiltration simpler that on premises today. It's a lot easier to go to work management until mr. CIO. We're reaching our limit. We're going to need more. Because we're giving the tools to show them as you can see. This is a life example for one of our to my one of our customers that we start working on a food production limitation and you can see how they run peanut and then you can also

see that, you know in February when we get most of the users. It was very nice to split between regular users and abusers. But as we have been finishing with imitation that the pink part very steady cuz you know now that uses are always there now because his name device people is like why I can never use concurrent licensing, but the good thing that needs to be done on this is you can actually Gleek on release users. Do you see at the bottom right here? There's a release users. So if you click their butt Citrus will show you the

control plane is that uses that have not login in 30 days so you can go there and hate release licenses. Are you getting all those license immediately back? Now if you'll get him very very short and you're purchasing process is taking a long time. Then you can probably go there and do it daily or do it, you know every so often no more than a monthly basis how there is an easy way for now. We're out now to be able to add remove licenses Frozen release the license. It's only musics come, you know come and go especially when we have you no third-party contractors or project-based contractors

that are going to be here for three months and then they need to go. It's an easy way for question. We need to go to the microphone. So I guess I had a heads up cuz we're recording the station. So can we wait until yeah. Yeah, so we get all the quest of the microphone I would I was told to say that Tell someone that license is not that we have learned. If you go with something like premium plus and you got $8,000 of premium plus you might think. Okay, when I'm giving up on Sunday Subway Story doing this for too long to eight thousand users, but for Citrix

endpoint management, I'm going to give it to another different a thousand users that you'll actually says that all the components need to be used by the same a thousand years. So if you have 16000 users and ate and ate so you going to have to still get 6in thousand licenses. So make sure that's that. The only difference is that that 8000 or 5000 or 100 is a soft cap, but if you go over the licensing You going to see a message on the console you went over to license? Even cabins once that

happens more often then use Citrix accounting will let will be advised customer is constantly going about and then is a conversation about how many more but it's not that is going to be mediately you get cut off when you go to a thousand and water the 101, please the stuff got it helped us. I've been told that it's about a 10% stuffed up. So the more you have the more the more stuff that cat is There are components of the services that will still remain to be on premises. So for micro VPN, for example with Citrix endpoint management, you are

entitled to a VP x3000 that you put on premises to the microwave pain, but that entitlement is just for send mobile or did you simply management? You cannot use that VPX to do I seriously can't wait for it, So just be aware of of you cannot do double duty in those things from a from a picture sent anything on Citrix cloud is premium so you don't have to worry about do I get when do I get PBS? Can I use this feature you you're entitled to all the pictures of you were buying on premises premium-level licensing is something that is offering

which I think it's a great offer. We might not be ready to go to Citrus Plaza tomorrow. We might not be ready to be in Citrix cloud in a year, but we know we want to get there. So on your neck or your next month and maintenance renewal, you can actually go and you know, subscribe to service Cloud hybrid rights and enforce it would be the final contract. You can run things on premises and you can run things on Citrix Cloud now, it doesn't mean that now you have a 8000 mm premises. It's an is an all-inclusive right as you get 8000 that can be distributed between the two environments. But

that's a pretty good. It also allows you to make a right size in of the environment on one of our customers. They had about 14,000 licenses between two companies that they were merging together. They did we win and we'll run some of the scripts to capture the date because they were all in premises we discover that they only needed about 10,000 licenses. So as part of their transition or trade up to the Cloud Civic allows us to actually right size for the number of license at the thought that the customer will need to get more or actually said, you know

what I don't need as many as I thought I was needing so take advantage of that and then four components like when more PBS or Citrix hypervisor, if anybody's using such as hypervisor, you still require a on premises licence in server. So soon will cut you a special key. That you would installing that on premise licensing server to activate those components that will remain on premises. So that's a little bit about licensing. That's that's what we have discovered when we have helped. So why don't you stay this is how we work on. So the first Escape was

very interesting. We got a call from a customer and they told her they send them this descended this in an email and they said hey, I have a data center. I'm building a second premise data center, set up user. I want you to sell me to naskila sonnenblumen gslv, so I can have an automatic Dr. Smok customer about two hundred users know what's your situation from how many people manage the environment? What's your expertise? There's Civics trailer was actually leaving the company. So we we said you know,

what? What if we take these and instead of putting to netscaler gslb and you know, Jesus Jesus will be the great the great is we're doing that. Why don't we go with Citrus Club? So what we did for that means we move all the control pain because of you can see here, you know, they have 200 user's this is the leader Marvel have six and up servers. They had to have eight. Management Service for 6 to service Civic Center service, so that that's that's a lot of overhead. So we are overhead.

We made it simple for them to manage environment. We still kept the netscaler something and we kept it because they wanted again way and we'll talk about the Gateway in a little bit but we were able to eliminate things like the web server and premises the date of a servers. We liberated obviously the storefront on on their controllers sell for smaller companies for small organizations. That might need a quick way. Just didn't looking for a Dr. This is the perfect scenario. We we were actually able to simplify their environment. The second scenario was a customer. Call

us. I'm in 2008 R2 set up six 5 and I need you to help me with a similar word to upgrade to 7 lyrics I we we actually told him why would you what would you do that? This company was an even bigger. They they obviously on the clock to get out of 2008 on how to fix five when we proposed is instead of having to a trade your environment right now create clothes on your service right now. Why don't we move your control plane again today Cloud, MN turn everything on premises and for 2008 is as simple as just replacing the video was removed

at the secrets PDF to install the 7th at X that we can install in that environment. And now there's red running on on cirrus cloud without the overhead that they had before so is it was a very easy way for them to upgrade and then you know this what we show them the scenario is in the future. They can easily add 2016-2019 servers and migrated out of 2008 on the owner step approach without having to worry about you know, what else do I have to do in the management Council? This project was referred to as they were they were they were they were very excited

about that and they saved a lot of money. Actually the biggest saving is what's on the tape across her. They were running a safe with Buster and that was the biggest savings for them cuz they they only have the tickets go through because they hide availability for 4. their setup environment the ark somebody came to us in the round Tower is a big Hardware partner as well, but somebody came to us as like I need to have the ER for my email setup suggestive environment. Can you help me to figure out a way of not making it so expensive right? They have about 25 hosts in one day that

a center they were wondering which other Datacenter they want to put things on and you know, we went with approach of why don't you put things in the public Cloud you put the couple Master images you have there and you spend things up and down as you need them. No using things like cloud formation and older automation tools are available in public clouds is very simple to Creative Images. MCS was were perfectly fine on public house. So we were able to get him a braided getting ready our plan and be able to test the are a lot faster we're going to assign things that we we

did with them in a little bit but that was there was another scenario is that will win with just making sure They are cheaper making sure that you don't have Dorman Hardware in your getting get you to getting dust that is not actually being used. The final on the most exciting one that we have done those forests two companies merge together and they said we want to be Cloud only we want to get out of the Datacenter. But we're not ready to merge our domains. So one of the great features that were able to do with Citrix cloud is actually give him a single URL to

login. I have multiple domains are they can pick from but at the same time have a single console where we can see both environments and environments were actually two different clouds. So that. Story of hybrid or choices, it actually works actually possible environment. I have an attorney that I have a HV. I have AWS Asher and I have a VMware esxi everything managed within the same console. Every single environment is the singles in a different domain. She's actually doable. It's

something that is is not paperwork. So this was this was very interesting that one thing that you guys haven't seen commonly here is that in order to make it to to talk to the control plane, you know, the cloud connectors are very important and we're going to talk a little bit about the clock connectors in and they come in as lights. So for use cases that have worked this company, we know that's that. There's nobody is what we take the screenshot out of the license until the station is being very interesting project where we have learned learned quite a bit

and what we have learned is when we're going to share on, you know, what to be aware of. By default Citrix Cloud can only give you a domain name that cloud cam. There is no way around that. So if you guys are looking to have your own domain or keeping your existing URL for your users. You know, we're going to have to do something different. We going to have to go and have a storefront on-premise. We're going to have to have a netscaler and Promises to accomplish that custom mural that you might be looking for a whip

challenge lyrics about why they don't allow us to have that run you your else and I think of some of the answers we have got our quite bothered. You know, how many organizations I was there are willing to give somebody that has a health certificate with a private key so they can retrieve the session right after that. So I don't think that's going to fly, but I know that they're working something similar know the challenge that you might have is is multi-factor Authentication. Depending who you use if you use radial saw reviews native of child, peeing or dual, there are no

good ways today. We saw an announcement at the keynote, but that's coming that will be here, but there's still something that we have to be at work. You will need in this physical out 8 on premises netscaler. So if you want to do radius basil syndication for two-factor authentication, you still going to need a netscaler on premises? If you don't want to let's get on premises and you want two-factor authentication on your eyes were all the way because you have Office 365 you might say, okay. I'm going to leverage I should be but I should the cones with MFA right with

Microsoft multi-factor authentication that works really really well now be aware that because I sure he will do things through some of Sanitation you going to break single sign-on. So if your navel I should a deal with him because of MFA and you click after you login you click on the icon to open your application or open your desktop. You going to be challenged to re-authenticate because that session is asking for a Kerberos ntlm tablet ticket. So you can buy that then you now if you want to use Ash Wednesday. I'm have single sign-on and then you're going to have to build an

on-premises fast environment. So, you know what is afraid of maybe the right approach for you, you know smaller customers might not want to have anything because that's the that's a promise of the clout right? I don't want to manage anything. Just give me a service bigger customers that might be perfectly fine. But be aware that is if you want to do multi-factor authentication, there are some considerations to make pick the right type of netscaler play ADC configuration, which I mean by this is If you're using on-premises

clustering for 4 units killer, I just move your lips together to AWS or Azure, that feature is not available. So if you're trying to do things like I don't want a single point of failure you going to do NHA prayer, but you know, I didn't even find point. You might have a single point of failure and that's what is important to keep more Promises to Keep Your net scalars up-to-date when you have the net scalars on premises you control the hypervisor. So you know that if there's something changing on hypervisor, normally you be aware that may or may

not impact minutes killer when you have a short AWS changing the order Alliance services that siblings might be relying on you don't know if the versus you have might have an impact, for example, if you're not on the latest and greatest version of of the 11th at 1 netscaler the HOA functionality is broken. We discovered that our way. We actually discover. We were normally doing testing, you know every so often you tell you a Chase failure on AWS one day we tested and you never happen. So be aware of off den of the changes that the underlined awsi

gdpr doing my have an impact. So it's important to be more up-to-date on the versions because as soon as if he's realizing there's a change coming we're going to make a new version that will address those changes. If you're using the storefront Annette's killers on premises you are not using workspaces. So if your morning after additional matter, so if because you need two Factor authentication and did it cost to me or else gives you using the bad service, but you're not using it works pay service. You're not going to see the integration that you saw in the demos

today. For example, you have apps and files and all the type of situations that is a cloud only offering so you want to 72 ratios that intelligent workspace. You going to have to move your store from you're going to have to move your ABCs to the cloud and use again we service. So those are some of the considerations. C325 there are three main types of connectivity on the civic's cloud service. The first one is definition of Gateway. That means that you're going to have a netscaler on premises you going to put

in. This is a certificate. Are you going to tell the service go there forever broker in my session if you use them as killer then it's going to be a service. Which works great. The problem is you only have one gigabyte of throughput per user per month. So if your uses are heavily while using heavily video or voice because there a call center that one giggle fruit good for using remote might not be enough. You might you throw give you the food in in a week. We saw I didn't, you know a 10 days of a cold Center if you're using, you know, UDP or dtls court for

traffic of your voice system so you can get what they call a man with a dance. So that's something you can never shave their contract when you using Skype into the service. Or if you're only using these guys internally, you might actually said you know what I don't need to get away service. I'm going to do the internal only and then the connection is direct between the end user on the civic center bore Citrix xendesktop workstation. So that is one one really good feature if you're on If you go with any vda that is 718 or newer

you actually going to be able to I'm going to bunch of this word. So they're randevu option which isn't everybody. Means that Citrix if your if your video server has access to the internet will not tunnel the connection through your power connector. The station will it starts with the club connector? But as soon as established in the end user will use the Gateway service to talk directly to their to their to the vdi server so that it's a great feature. It helps a lot with it helps a lot with Band Wizard illustration, but be aware that you're in your server will have to have internet

connection album internet connection. Also, if you guys are planning to deploy a whim and you're subscribing to the whims service not using on premises when your VA will also need internet connection and I were first implementation of the one service we were trying and trying and policy will not come down and we'll come nothing. We open the case and you know that we discover that wasn't our vda servers didn't have internet connection. So be aware of using the web service required to start the VA to have internet connection, which might be a

problem for some highly secure environments. So be aware that this All the things that we have learned, these are one actually give a shout out to my to my colleagues around our because a lot of this thing is is the things that they have had to work more than me and they have just paid writer. Did you know they say something, you know, things I didn't know for example, if you are implementing on a phone on a resource location on AWS and you delete the default VPC MCS will not work lcla MCS depends hundred percent on the default VPC to be there.

So we didn't have the default VPC because normally customers will delete that because you know, they were very private security. So we have to recreate a default VPC. The instant is very important. So I don't know if you guys are aware but for example AWS the t2 instances which art way cheaper and when your power and things up and down makes a different environment where fordable they have been recalled portable credit, which means that they're they're cheering that your price is because they're assuming that the server will get a 20% insulation

constantly what is power when is under that 20% you start accumulating credits that when you go over to 20% they start consuming so that they sell at the end. You're always going to be about 20% what happened we want to customers is what we did a few see everything was good. But if we start having more and more users they were they were chewing through their portable credit. And what does aidoneus do when they drop when you run it actually throws you down? Say what caused the CPU it will cut the performance is even cut the network bandwidth to that server.

So one of these are we did with them if they seem like that the option to be up and down a lot more flexible than all the time. But there is a check box that says hey if I go above my credit just charged me. So be aware of the type of instances you're using for example dedicated host are not supported by Citrix Cloud but dedicate his guests are so that's one of the things that we have to look zones and delivery groups are your friends on and examples of Michelle when the very first yusuke's we have the two data centers. So we created Tucson's obviously one

for each Datacenter. We created the single delivery group with the name of the pouch application and then you don't reference in mode. We will tell always go to my primary Center less is not available. Then automatically goes to the second one. But that's an easy way to leverage Donuts delivery Brooks to have an automatic failover for an application in case of a synapse server outage. Obviously. There's more exclusive vacations if you have a fool than your average, but that's one thing that that you want to Leverage. On-premises images can actually be leveraged AWS gcp

that you can take a previous image or a V8 or at least the exit and come and converted into their default instances. So you don't actually have to redo your master images of you don't want to which is really really good. It's safe all the time now be at work to do Evie's. For example, you have to remove the previous tools. If it's only a sex server, you have to remove the Essex tools as well. So but you can actually take the exact same VM just move it to the cloud to start testing rather quickly. We talked about

clock collectors and how important they are stateless and Citrix when you install the first class connector immediately with show you affection that says you did you would recommend you have at least two to be complying because I being stateless Citrix actually will deploy software to the clock when I first automatically without asking anything. So that's one thing that we will always still our customers always there. I would change management and I were monitoring teams. Don't don't worry if this. Can I drink Goes Down syndrome is probably find something but because it will

happen at any time if you only have two on Civics does a update then go down to one. I need for any reason you're out of luck and Microsoft precious because Microsoft never crashes then all your stations might go down depending how you doing the traffic. So we recommend always swing for metal is free. So in case I will wait until the first one is completed. AC condenser So you you're limiting your exposure. There be aware that the SLA that Siri will give you is 99.5%

So if you're one of those companies that are looking for that, you know, five nights of of availability of option for you guys because you know, it's the 99.5. I didn't order to give that you have to have a minimum one-year subscription on 100 years. So if you're under that you're actually you're never going to be guaranteed on this life and if you read the fine print basically what it says his we will give you a 10% of your bill as a credit that laptop that they will give you as an FYI. And then for automation the remote APK is there in works.

We we can we can install it on our local computers and still use Powershell script the customers that we are graded from from 2008 on 65 they had a bunch of SD case we converted this is the case and we still be able to use for automation. So if you're migrating phones, if you're migrating things from premises support Cloud, you can use the other cases extraction to use as K2 at things back into it. Delivery groups cream machine Carla. That is all completely doable through as the case is very important as as you don't want to repeat the same clicking. I mean, at least

I don't want to repeat the same the same clicking are we getting down to the top of the hour and five minutes of overtime? So before you leave I want to I want to highlight in a few sessions that than our friends see if he's will do if you guys want to do like a really in-depth super station on on how you do multi size. You notes section 217. It's a 90-minute session. So be prepared when your caffeine but that's a great session to go. You can have a lot of Grey. Speakers but it is a long session and you know that decision about best

practices for 4. Some desk jobs as well content collaboration. I think that that's one of the favorite products that we have seen the sheriff Alan how you can leverage for over 65. So those are some of the station that I would recommend you guys do I especially the first one is going to be is going to be a great great session remember to finish the service before May 13th at 9 p.m. Am sorry and that most of the stations will be ready on On Demand on the power points will be available on June 3rd. I'm finally remember

to do the section service. It don't help us help us to to bring more session and help us to understand if you get a license for liking decisions are not unhealthy to get points on on the game. I'm with that guys. I'm going to open it for the last eight minutes to questions. Not that's all I have for you guys. I'll give you 5 minutes back on your day. Thank you very much.
