About speakers
Duncan Owen joined Schroders in January 2012 and is the Global Head of Real Estate. The role has responsibility for providing leadership and developing the growth strategy of the business as well as its investment direction. He chairs Real Estate Investment Committee and SREIM board, as well as a member of the Real Estate Global Indirect Investment Committee. He is also the Investment manager for Schroder UK REIT. Duncan was CEO of Invista Plc from 2006 to 2012, which involved setting the strategy and growth of the listed company. Invista was formed from the Fund Management business of Insight Investment Management Limited. He joined Insight in 2003 following its acquisition of Gatehouse Investment Management, the real estate investment management boutique which he co-founded. He was a main board director at Insight Investment from 2003 to 2006 and was Head of Alternative Investments, responsible for driving the strategy and growth of the business. He was a Partner at Jones Lang LaSalle from 1990 to 2000, which involved PanEuropean real estate fund management. Duncan has 30 years of Real Estate experience, has a degree from Sheffield City University, is a qualified chartered surveyor. He studied at Insead Business School and is an FCA approved person. He is also a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and British Property Federation’s Policy Committee.
View the profileMelanie joined the British Property Federation in 2015, following nine years as Director General of the Food and Drink Federation. Melanie began her working life as a Police Constable in the Metropolitan Police Service. She joined HM Customs in 1988 and subsequently held senior roles in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Office of the Rail Regulator and the Cabinet Office. Her role is to champion UK real estate and to promote a sustainable partnership between governments and the sector to deliver a high quality built environment.

We decided to focus as much as we possibly could in those areas where we can make a difference. Obviously on those areas that are related. We had a look at statistics and one of the best indicators we've concluded was the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal. That's what we use now, and there are some 18 of those goals. When we reviewed them we thought there were 4 key things in which we can achieve measurable positive impact.
