Hello. It's such an honor to be here. Having a conversation with a friend, a soul sister is very talented, singer television personality. Author can go on and on a businesswoman overall inspiration. She was born as Jenna but known to the world as Chiquis Rivera and talk about the importance of investing in yourself who better to tell her, then she continues. Hi. How are you? I'm so happy to have this conversation. Thank you. I really want to learn from you. I know we're friends, but I just admire everything that you do. I mean tell us a little about how you learned about the business.
I started very young. I was born in the music industry with my grandparents, a selling cassettes at the swap meet. Then we went on to having our own music store, where we sold CDs, and then CDs were gone. But I've since I was born in this, you know, and I learned all the business for my mom. I was her right-hand woman or 26 years of my life. And now that you started your music career, you know you have reality show, you're such a success on social media. People want to know, how do you have the courage to
say? I'm going to try new things. I'm going to invest in yourself in different, a business opportunity. you know, I'm I think it's very important to try things to take a risk. That's one thing that I do. I take risks, I, I want to do and I want to try it. I don't think too much about it. I'm like, you know what, I'm not afraid to fail in order to be successful, you have to know how to feel. And I know that sounds weird, but if you fail, you grow, you learn. And I definitely have fried things on my Facebook and I think that's
what's help me. Because I'm like, I don't want to live with the what if, what if I would have tried it, or I'd rather fail than live with the fear of never doing something because of what people will say or because I can't do it. That to me, that's been a game-changer and it's something that I feel like I'm going to do it. I'm going to do it, right? And I'm going to go for it. And that's what's help me, to be honest. I don't worry about the outside voices. I can't, I can't afford to do that. I will give you the strength because a lot of us fail once and we're like, no, I'm too afraid. I'm
just not even going to try it anymore, will give you that strength. Knowing that I am a huge believer in the universe. And God, I am a spiritual woman and its face to be honest. It stays in in knowing that I can't handle. And that every obstacle that I have Stace has been away to catapult me to the next life, you know. And I think that that has been the main thing for me is face is face that, you know what, because it is, is it's not tangible. It's something that you can't see, you just have to go for it, you know, and, and that's what I've done. And I saw my mom,
my mom was the same way he was, I will let me know that she always told me figure it out. I don't know how you're going to figure it out and that's what I do. I figure it out, someway somehow, I know everything's going to be okay. And that's one of the things that you connect so well with your audience, especially in social media because you're giving up daily reminders on your stories, on your post, about the importance of healing, the importance of face and prayer. I feel like you you grown and now it's like something way more
important than your life. Absolutely. I am I just recently won a Latin Grammy and I remember the morning that I woke up. I felt it in my heart. I said, oh my goodness. I think I have a chance and I remember telling God, if I win, if I promise, if it wasn't, if it's not for you, I have a great team work. But in reality I just I'm telling you, I owe it all to God. I am not perfect. You know, I want to be better every single day is God has given you. The one
giving me this voice, I want to do this or something positive, I believe in in giving words of lice and out of deaths and that it's an everything that I do even if there's a song and I don't like the word it right? I change it I feel like that's what my mission is you know your music for writing books. Through my social media, my mission is to Power to inspire because of difficult. And I seen a lot of things and I I can't let that stop me and my mission to help others in any way that I can.
And it's such a beautiful thing, because, I mean, we've talked about this before, but you've gone through really difficult things in life and you say, I am not a victim like I'm not going to allow myself to be a victim, and I think that also burn so much with a lot of us. So how is that? I have this. I mean, it's something that again, I I learned since I was little, you know, I was sexually abused by by my father and my mom never doubted it. I told her and she didn't, she never treated me differently. She never felt sorry for myself.
I I just am not. I cannot think about all my God, poor me. I went through this cuz I'm not the only one that's going to things and eight things can be worse, you know. So to me it's like I cannot be a victim of my past of the pain that I have encountered is not. I'm going to use that. I always stay the same as a promotion and if you're if you Embrace that pain, then you can grow from it, you know, and and that's what I've done. You know, I know that's so big to me, you know, cuz I'm not the only one. I think we can
all write a book of our life. You know that we all go through things, this is how you deal with it and how you come out of it and makes the difference. And your book. Actually, you wrote it in 2015, forgiveness reading, it brought me to tears when I initially read it because you were so open about your life. You know, I can create everyone, everyone messages, everyone talks handling that and still having a smile on your face, like, to me, that's that you have so much courage and I think that's what we
want to get to know you. I want to be able to handle the heat. You can stay right. Because, I mean, a lot of people can do that. How do you handle the negative comments? I'm not going to say that it's been easy. It's been something that I being a part of this industry. I've lived and I've seen I have personally gone through a lot of criticism and adversity, but again, I don't, I don't let that consume my heart. I don't let that because I think negatively
don't know me. And that's what gives me peace that I might give you sat down with me for five minutes. You're going to know you're going to feel the type of person that I am. And I'm very confident in that in a person that I am. I wrote that book because I just felt it was necessary to explain a lot of things, a lot of doubts, and questions that people had about me as a woman. And I always thought, you know, I owe that to my future self. I owe that to my future children, my future husband so that they
know I did everything that I could to You're my name and to tell my truth and to also share the importance of forgiving the Liberty to success is forgiving. So that's where my back in the days I thought it was going to be I want to be an author and it just came to me. You know, it came to me and and I are being now with social media. It just you know, the bullying cyberbullying is crazy. The trolls out, they're crazy about about that, you know, and it's just it's a part of this. But we have to just know like I always told
myself, I'm not the first one, I'm not the last one and I'm not alone in this, you know? It's it's again how how we deal with it and we just have to brush your shoulders off. You like you know what, the end of the day the people that know me I go to sleep and I'm in peace and that's that's all that matters. And that's who I think being like in the public eye, like you are, how do you have that closed circle? Like, how hard is it to know that the people around you are loyal and are, are, are there for your gold and looking out for your best interest? You know what? It's
it, it wasn't always like that. I had to encounter people. That did me wrong that bridge betrayed me in order for me to choose better, you know, and to value my team, the value of the people around me, and I think the more people you have around you, it's, it's a little harder to keep track. So, the people that are in my home, the people that I have on my teeth, the music I need to feel you. I need to be here with you. I I I think it's super important to respect your your team and for them to respect. I wake up every morning and I
have integrity and want the best for every single day. That's what I say, cuz it's hard. You know what I mean? And and I just I'm intentional about having a good relationship and being very tense. Especially my team. A team is very, very important in anything that you do and I can't sit here and tell you that, I've done everything that I've done by myself because I haven't, there's a team that's here, sustaining me. And I think that that's the people don't give enough
credit to to so their team to the people around them because it's, is that a one, one man show, you know, it really isn't And that there is part of the investment, right? Like investing your team so that you're able to invest in your brand, you have beauty products, you have broke, how does it come about and what are your ultimate goals? Yes, investing in yourself is so important and that's one thing. I'm not afraid to do is invest. I feel like you need to be able to say, okay, I'm I I want qualities
quality over quantity and I've always said, you know, I have to really believe in what I'm doing in order to do with all my heart. So if you're sure, I'm going to invest in it, you know, I'm going to invest time, I'm going to invest energy my love. It's not just Financial, it's in every way, like be completely invested and what you're doing, be disciplined, be consistent. And that's why it's another. It's important to have a good team because if they're doing what they have to do, you're allowed to do what you need to do. You know, it's it
it really is a team effort and I have great partners and I'm not afraid to delegate. That's one thing that a lot of people want to do things themselves and sometimes I'm not going to lie on my who I should just do it myself cuz I probably get done better. Ego to the side and learn to delegate and say, you know what can you handle this for me? I can't do it on myself and knowing that is such a release, and that's why I think I'm able to do as much as I do. You know, I'm recording a new album, I am writing a book. I have my Cosmetics lying, I'm
bringing out my, you know, my skin care line, but these are structured and having a routine and waking up early. That's, that's also very important waking up early so that you have enough time and hours to get all of it done. And this is part of the discipline, right? A lot of people think I'm just going to wish for it. It's going to come my way but you can just a French for all these years. It wasn't like one day, the day. Everything is magically happening for you, right? Yeah. You know I miss is where it comes that thing where they say
Talent isn't enough, you know you can be the most wonderful singer or actress or whatever. But if you're not disappointing, you're not willing to wake up and do what you have to do and not do certain things. Then then that's it's going to be a little bit more difficult. You know what I mean? And I think that's what set me apart from the rest to be very honest. And I'm I'm I'm willing to put in the work. I am very hardworking, I will do anything that I have to do to get things done, I left work, it keeps me busy and keeps
me sane. It keeps me like, not thinking, you know, about things that I should be thinking about you. So, so, yeah, I mean, it's just a discipline consistency. I can save enough is being consistent and doing things and Has a routine every morning. Kind of does the same thing and it is true. It is really just becomes a habit. You know? Investing in time investing and believing in yourself and mental health and having like a strong team. If it's all about
loving yourself, right? How long did it take for you to feel this complete cuz I think as you're growing up your kind of struggling with confidence is struggling with doubt and I just see you as a woman and it's cuz you're like I'm here You know what? It wasn't always like this, you know, why? I had to go through certain things and realize certain things and, and it's crazy because for a long time, I thought. Okay, I got it. I'm good. I got it all together. I'm a woman and then comes the time where you go do something personal.
I'm going through a separation or not through a divorce and it really has other things to my knees. And I haven't felt that in a very, very long time. It was a very dark place and I think I've managed to get myself out of that and I went through a moment where I couldn't see myself in the mirror. You know, I don't allow myself to be sad for too long because life is too beautiful and I'm like, God and those are the moments when I think everything that I've been able to accomplish and the people that are counting on me, that watch me through my
social media to watch me on television. Now, listen to my music, inspire me to get up and say I want to be better. I'm going to get out. This is just a moment, it's not a bad life, it's a bad day, you know? So that's what keeps me motivated. But, but believe me. I mean, it's all about. I really can say I love myself. And it goes back to people, being so mean on social media and stuff and and criticizing you and stuff. But you just have to know who you are here in your heart and I really truly believe that beauty comes from
the heart and then it radiates outward, you know. So I keep that in mind. I'm not going to say that there aren't days at certain comments get to me because they do I'd be lying but I don't let don't let that consume you anymore. You know for the most part I'm confident in who I am and what I want to be and what my mission in life is and I'm just determined to leave a footprint on her on this Earth. So I don't have time to be sad for too long. Shake It Off. I want you to experience that in Irwin and now I know
what did you learn from this experience has a lot of people go to break up separation divorces and you can let go or you go into deep depression or anxiety, you know, it's really hard. Yeah. I felt all of those feelings, especially going through it during quarantine. I felt that depression in the anxiety, and, and work, just, it was kind of like putting a Band-Aid on everything on the wound and I just kind of slow down. I don't think, you know what I need? I need to figure this out is when I started just feeling it. But that's, that's one thing I like. I have to feel what I'm feeling in
order to get over it. I can't keep suppressing it because one day it's going to come up. So I might as well just deal with it or I yell and and also read and meditate and pray. And that's also what I did and I'm like, I'm going to get over this too, shall pass, you know, and it was a very difficult moment and I realizing that I had to get myself out of this situation, it was, it was hard, but I had to love myself enough to say, you know what, I am not happy. This is this is becoming toxic. It's not healthy for me, or for him. And I have to make a decision. And I think once when
you do it kind of Against your will you know? Cuz that's not really what you want but you know that that's what's best for you. I think God honors, those things and one that has helped me is well with with music writing songs and feeling inspired. And I always try to I know it sounds a little cliche but I always try to take every positive something positive out of every situation because there is there's always a Learning lesson behind every everything that you go through. How did how does your heart feel
about love? After going through all this? I love love. You know, I don't want to be painted. I I I have so much love to give and I believe in love and love is the moving force of the universe and I just know that I need to work on myself and love myself and get myself back into a healthy position. And really be the person that I want to see the reflection of the person that I want to attract, you know. So I decided for the future to be honest, I'm excited to see what's in store for me, especially when it comes to love. I want to be treated or tainted. I'm not might know, you know
what every person that comes into your life, as a teacher and master and and I take it is that you know and and I learned something about myself what I want. I don't want in the next relationship and that's just Just what I do. I'm like, I'm learning, I'm still. And you radiate that beauty that that love to your audience into all your silence. Now, how do you balance it all? Cuz it's not easy. I see you. Also let me know you work nonstop, and then you're also at home cookie. You have a new puppy. You're very family-oriented. How do you
balance it? It took me a little bit to get the hang of it at first, cuz I was always. So used to be behind the scenes of my mom and helping her out. And when I stepped into this, and it's something that I wanted to do, it was a little difficult at first. What is all really? It is. All life is all balance. You know, anything that you do too much and inaccess, if it's not good for you, you know. So I I really that's why I had to kind of think he's, you know, that the singer of the author of the performer, the, you know, all these things. And then there's Janae Soca music
ice, always need a little bit of Janae in my life. And I need, you know, I need to have a routine and because I also need that, you know, we all need that. So little bit of everything, just kind of helps me stay Center in my higher self and and because I need to clean. Want to wash clothes. I want to do all the things that makes me feel like, you know, it's still me. I don't want to lose that part of myself, you know. And of course I like the hair in the
makeup and being on time and I miss performing, but I also enjoy being a woman, you know, I really really do. So I am a very intentional and adamant about not losing that side of your losing sight of of the woman, you know, behind a Chiquis And I totally love that and I think investing in therapy, right? Like let's get rid of all those negative thoughts and all these things we went through when we were really shape, you know. So there's a need to take care of my mental health.
Absolutely, absolutely. I think that's part of investing in yourself as well. Getting massages. People don't understand the importance of. It's not just getting a massage. It's a luxury know it's necessary. You know, where are you life coaching all these things? Because if it helps to let out whatever it is, you have in here, or in here and get an unbiased opinion and someone is going to be straight up with you and not just going to tell you yes. Because you pay their bills or because they don't want to upset you you know, and and I need that. I I need to be told, you know what you're
wrong for. You could do this better because I want to grow, I really, really want to throw. I want to learn. I have that inside of me I want to be better every single day and that's part of me becoming a better version of myself is investing in myself and that way for sure. What is the greatest take away? You want your audience when they see your posts to take? Where would you want them to learn from you? More than anything. That despite everything that I've been through that, they've heard about me. I am here and I am not afraid to try new things. I'm
not afraid to be criticized. I, I want them to know if I could, you know, if I know lost my dad, he's in jail because of what happened? My mom lost my mother. I've gone through so much. I am not stopping. I'm not going to sit here and let life pass by. I want to take control of it of my life of my feelings and I want to be and that's what I want people to to learn from me a social media through my songs that if I could do it, you can to like, definitely you can Chiquis Rivera are
amazing. I am so proud of everything happening in your life and I know that you music is coming. So I'm looking forward to it. Thank you so much for being part of this conversation so much pleasure right now. I don't know what you for being here and thank you everyone because stations like this, thanks guys.
