UK CreaTech companies raised nearly £1bn in venture capital investment in 2020, up 22% on 2019, and ahead of the £846m raised by Energy Tech in the same period, according to a new report commissioned by the Creative Industries Council and produced by Tech Nation. The level of investment into CreaTech suggests that the UK is emerging as a global centre of excellence. A second stage of this research, launched at CogX 2021, examines CreaTech’s impact on UK employment, job roles and skills and projects the future potential of this dynamic UK growth story.

View the profileHello. Hello, and welcome back. So there's a few that are joining us from this morning and welcome to those. You have two sausages Island. Welcome to the create text stage acts, which is picture races with the creative Industry, Council a joint for him between business and governments that basic, he seizes on health and we had a year of those, but we posed to have. We had any of this morning from how wonderful the climate is around KitchenAid, is around the Creator
coming this week and they're all 70s. Session. Don't forget to tweets hashtag created without any further adue. I'd like to just use the Wonder Woman Janet. Hello, who is the IP address for marketing strategy and the creative Industries council's. Create a channel open to you. Thank you. I love everybody and welcome to this special session looking in-depth apps to create a report 2021 which launches today? Why are we doing this research? We at the UK creative Industries Council have been using the time between a check for over 5 years now, but, you know, all the loose way to describe the
Innovation where creativity technology to create an Evidence base from which to develop a business growth strategy for create Act. Who did we choose to help us with it? I we wanted you to pump before I researched. Who would add value and respect you thinking and that's why we chose technician the organization behind the annual check Nation report actually, discussing the future of old-tech across all sectors of the UK economy has mentioned, show me. They could do it for create a
check to and shed hunting with us along the way. I talked to George Windsor and cinnamon fights manager technician Diana, a condo and we're going to bring you some of the highlights of the credit report findings and what it means for the future. Just to say, this is my first report of its kind and therefore, necessarily a flower tree and a big thank you to my partner's dcms. Kingston Smith for sharing in the risk with us, the form that the report takes a focus in the early forties on three things, one investment to skills and jobs,
three, barriers, and opportunities. The findings are both informative and encouraging. I'm pleased to say, Send it start with investment and Africa series on venture capital investment. And I'd like to turn Pastor George Georgia. And do you have some exciting big statistics to share and some protections that will help us plan the potential? I think it's just best to say. This is amazing project to work on really exploring the drivers of any credibly critical area of UK, Economic Development. And
in the last session, Minister. Dynagen Tech Nation, Chad, Stephen Kelly to pass through some of the headlines in this session. What do you think about how we can take you a text? So some of those big headlines? They caught one really focused on the create a combatant landscape wall spot to which we published today, focuses on the future of create at Casey's. You say, Janet. We look to VC investment. I'm as an important measure, and indicator. What's happening in create at, and you can find both reports on
the nation website technician. I owe to the headline rate is 1 billion pounds, worth of investment, last year, 22% up on 2019 and this investment represented 9% of total tax at 6, a.m. Baseman in 2020 compared to countries like the US and China. Where event Batman tents are your activity in the UK economy compared to some of these, the US and China that are all keep balances will be set at the moment. I'm in Tech to give you a sense of context and some of the most sophisticated
Technologies developed in the UK, and the Clyde all happening in. Create EXO, artificial intelligence in machine learning, space companies. Receive the highest portion of Grey Tech investment in 2020 with just under half a billion pounds, right? And actually, we know given this R&D Rich intensity activity that you can't have all the ingredients to accelerate the growth of crazy. Diana's going to look at some of the finest is being said that the growth
rate old createk is going to really accelerate over the next couple of years. Means. The create a Kik is seen as being alone bored. So he collected monthly VC data between January 2018, and December 2020 possible future. If things would continue as they are and create a but then If there was something that would tweaked if we made some supported interventions to really enable create a check to flourish in a way that it is a serious adults unity's Watercrest based on where things were already heading,
will probably reach about 1.1 billion pounds by the end of 2020. One cent increase on the record levels. We saw an Angel by the end of 2022, up to 1.8%, real move, a shift in UK economy, delivering, huge social, as well as, Economic returns to Country, how to create check compares to the other check if you like. But where are we in the pecking order? And I think this is red white. It's really useful Odyssey to. I'm conducting to take Nation report over a number of years pasta. None of the
2021 report a sentence with context and then let us understand the relative Drive is of these important areas of activity. So strong, when we do it in the trailer companies raised more than energy companies in 2020. Trans Tech and to give you a sentence with slightly longer sector within 20, to $650 up to 1.7 billion dollars. Sent you the full billion dollars a huge increase in investment from 28, not mention those things because it's important to get the
company's a set of jobs skills, options that spanned the entire economy. Impact on these areas. We need to be thinking about well as individual companies. Are you good? I think what we what we have here is a snapshot of what we have here is a few over. Of time, but I think the key is what we can do with creating the create act through the economy into the future. So that's crazy. Industries. Climate Tech, really let the window companies that we need something similar when we seen a 35%
with 14% of the next year. I will take with 10% over the next year than sure that was 2% and the things few years for the UK. You mentioned already with third behind the US and China when it comes to investment, but what about comparisons? Where is Europe? And other major crops of the wild watch about International Investment coming in to create a Kik relative to other sectors. Can you give us some feeling about that place you? As soon as he mentioned Janet the UK stud in the wall to create Tech Museum back
and it's in a real position of strength shed with the tech sector has a hole in the world. I'm going to get India in 2020. I'm in the tech sector as a whole bit about Europe. Why that's a sin II to be one of those who create a global leader. I have many unicorns in the sector and 6.5 billion pounds worth. Of investment was made in the US crate at companies in 2020. The next time country, China, China Heaven itself, very strong create X compared to the UK with 9%
investment represented by creating a hose. UK. Ready is punching above its weight. When it comes to create a scenario strength in China in 2020 and the UK really lead the way in Europe for Crazy 8. Okay, I'll check with 266 million with 159 million pounds. That's worth remembering the web car this year because it's and the strength together and ready and leave as we can pull it to support great at going. It's crazy investment tripled since 2017 in Germany and increased by 16% over the same.
And we've seen in the Netherlands, for example, crazy investment has grown from a low base. So the UK. Strongly the competition's, hold out that and we really need at 10 you supporting this or scanning growth? So when we think about Trade Tech investment, I'm at the national investors to create a Kik. Most the reverse and we see that about 64% of the investment into a tech companies in the UK is from domestic. In fact, so unusual and radiant, if we were to see that
boost to the same extent that UK tack is a whole week. Possibly up to a billion pounds more investment in the UK on a global stage and suddenly UK creative companies are performing very very strongly already in the world. Just one more question for you, George, before I turn to Diana, fantastic news about this potential for growth. Of course, we have to deliver against a potential and it looks to me, five, red three dates are correct that the opportunity is all around the UK. When it comes
to create, I cannot this in itself is also a point of difference from perhaps some of the other Tech sectors. They were very much in the Realms of the leveling up agenda, when it comes to government strategy. That is the case. In many respects. We found the Crazy Horse across, the country represents that is well, and is very much into that leveling up agenda. This is not an exclusively London and South-East Focus area. Scotland V, England, the West, Midlands,
even robust evidence of creating investment activity in UK regions and Nations. I like the emergence of create X across the region. Southwest of the UK have highest leading investment with 1.7 million billion investment into gray tech companies in London. During the way. It sounds like the size of deals across the UK in some areas where we like the northwest. We know actually from other research. We conducted a technician out, scale ratio report growing emerging
from a slightly lower base defense of that elf on Sunday and exit every Tech hubs. We identified as ones to watch over the next year. They have the highest proportion of seed stage companies, compared to any other than the UK. And I definitely say they are the house to watch when it comes to create a real established players. So definitely contributing. Ring on this projected growth opportunity, relies so much. Does it knocks on skills and jobs? And I know you've been doing a sterling job defining the
trends in create jobs and skills, which is known mean speech. Because many of these jobs is so new that that difficult to quantify. I never in my own world of advertising. Every day. I meet another job description, you know, ux design, Innovations. I went to Creative Technologies to do this when you mention around advertising actually because I was working out front at the size of that point was actually quite. When changing from just static ball to ditch to Autoplan and announced. They were
looking at crane Tech job. So I'm showing off new jobs actually emerge from that. Take me to point as well, but due to the methodology. So which is a job search engine. They cover about 90% of the UK job, or I'm leaving. Dater. We looked at around forty million job, advertisement to understand the types of role. That could be defined as creative jobs included, but is not limited to roll such as all tastes photographer, designer, Fashion Stylist, but we've been in that
category. That was a subset which record what you have been using for years to create a check which was found by looking at the still employs us for, which was a combination of creative and design skills that I created. Created to create a check as well. Yeah, I just figured coming from the city-state of Alexa up until 2019, but just be just better and More Lies, not in latest, an up-to-date data from 2017 to 2019, result of great grace in the demand for trade sexual. So that would mean crease from 49% to 56 Pence. For
employee damontre. Tech jobs that they will probably be the increase for 2020 particularly given. That is a real push for people being employed with digital text Bill. Weiner. Now that this to text account for 9% of the UK web for, that's really important area, arm of the UK. And in such as graphic designers. Got increased by 5% from 2017 to 2019. I don't say user interface, designer weather the month for that role increased by 17% and play a particularly important in tech company. The company Trade Tech companies that we see today. So
we know about design-related goolsbee night at creative world on, not limited chapter 9. However, you must know that from the day that we looked at. We did see that the vinyl rolls which was an example of achromatic roll uploaded account for 20% of advertising is a really important area, but that is not ignoring the types of rules that are important as well within created. It just shows the importance of 50% on average. How does that varies by region? Are you able to do any around the
UK splits? In order to show the shape of it? So there are no surprises. Want any London? I was 75% of advertise creative, jobs were created. Technology. Has four major South East and the Northwest where this accounted for about, 63 and 56% respectively for critical role at the time. But I also just around in your case, to the East West, Midlands and Yorkshire, whatever 50% of creative roads, were created jobs important. Again of digital skills, combined with the creative sector across the UK and the major Hospital actually that is
growing to the strength as well. Mariah Carey concert in half. We got the high demand enough Supply to meet that demand. Is there anything in? You can give us guidance on that or we picking up Rachel Academy Chester salary for create a growth and Gendry from a salary and what is offered? We can find a type of supply and demand that is needed for that wrong with a job. Salary was just over forty five Thousand Palms, unlimited individual create across such as an architect or vinyl. These roles far exceeded the median, the basement this
weekend in Florida, is difficult to do these roads because generally, when an employer is Demonte, false killed, the are rare. The price point. In this case, the salary will be in, Ohio. And actually, I was looking at the report carried out by the University of Warwick, which was commissioned by the government that it was launched in 2018. And it was a slick and what skills? I don't need to fax it in the workplace. Now, when is next 10 years is how it has transformed to include digital in the title place before where you type
of content creates. And now you have digital content creator. So it's just saying how digital products have become part of our life. We use it before I don't believe like a big check play like Facebook on Google but we must not forget, you know, that creative element of it. It's very important for the apps that we used to Tech products that we use as well. Looking at Job boards. You would have got your sense of the stools of technical skills are being asked. Anything that you can share with us on that. Yes, say yeah, A
Dangerous Mission. Createk rolls with defined as Roseway and play darts with skills with a combination of creative and Technical digital still very sore. For example, for a designer typically, on average the type of skills School were like HTML CSS, Adobe, which is designed to support the dish, twin technical side. But then Walter creative and softer side of business. Communication. Of course, we know that is important for any type of role of business today, or yesterday was such as instruments in storytelling on
network, which is really important to deliver on the types of jobs that we saw, which was really important. Thank you so much. So we reviewed, if you like to come on stage of the nation, when it comes to creating quantitative analysis, but I know that there was a stud to a study, which was talking to key stakeholders, both within the UK investment and education Community. It will be great to know what's up with you and she's embarrassed, you identified through those interviews
for Creative talents and skills stakeholders for those. We know because they cut today till all day long. It's supposed to walk to look into these people are, she gave us some contacts to understand what is happening in the day today and delivered but really going to draw a cone, some key insights from the likes of Philly Diner and Jessica had some inside facility. He really speak about the knee. Creativity in jobs on creating businesses they stem from. I did, I won't be seeing Creed experience to be torqued to on this experience after
creative element to fight of human. That should not be ignored and without that, without the creativity for a check. But I think I have the emphasis on the creativity. Not just the technology side of opportunity in that cave is really around communication. So that should I be speaking to everyone. Just the usual suspects without me and now you innovators to write something that I did forward and then dying a sheet of the Camden steam commission. She spoke about the importance of team, which is spying technology, engineering art as a place to
stay and we should just fight technology. Engineering math, of course, midnight as a big fish first and becomes us killed. However, I gay Generally, it's communicated a puppy, that's not very strategic. But your business is really continue to succeed and having access to a young local talent and it really drive to message forward. Things that you speak is very important and you can use art with a combination spy technology, engineering and math. And yes, I for people to be expected from a really young age. So they
know what opportunities and careers parts are available to them, helpful, insight and planning to really helpful for the creative creative work Nobel, prize-winning find his hockey free times more likely than the Irish scientist to have an autistic norcroft hubby. It shows the importance of creativity again. Conducting interviews with other people about virus and opportunities. Did you find anything here that we should take cancel in terms of accelerating the future and future investment in
the UK? So many things for that time and didn't put in, you can find them online. I'm sorry. One of the things that I wanted to draw attention to really, is that there was a massive opportunity. Is incredibly important as the collaboration knowledge exchange and the educating investors around the creating opportunity could make a significant difference to the prospect according to the stakeholders of domestic and international investors investing in early-stage
UK great at companies right now, and then I'm a flip side. Maybe those company. The last we're over the opportunities out there, monks Angel, Network to private equity and venture capital. Course, we already Tops on the international picture. There's a huge opportunity. If we can start to bring in this, a scan of International Investment that we see in a hole, the size of the prize is enormous. And so has mentioned, we could expect to see a boost to do the 1 billion pounds to investments in UK. If we were to see that slip from domestic to International
Investment being the majority of these except in educating, and I didn't get any better than the UK place at companies are looking for that. So I access to finance being a catalyst to catalyst. On the economy and it will really help as mentioned in the leveling a building back from the distraction education investment. As we look ahead for the next two years. We on this conference create, I could coax out here to Showcase some of that potential. And we're hoping that in the audience today that may be many people coming from other stages of kodak's to find out more about
one of the things I just couldn't help. But mention before we finish, our session is the program. We have at the creative Industries cancel to actually profile create tech companies. Collaborations start up some projects under the banner of creative ones to watch. We're looking to select a hundred companies this year in 2021 to Showcase all through our program has one week left to enter this particular team. And so, I'd love you all to go to a booth cic, createk ones to watch and find out more on the creative Industries. Dr. UK website to find out more again.
Willows. I put some links later, you can take it forward. I have really enjoyed the session with George and with Diana. This research has received is the first-of-its-kind and it suddenly giving us some point of the way to take create at Coolidge. I just like to invite George and Diana for one last 4 weeks. What would you like to say? Thank you, David. I'm so, if I'm a very quick things, we clearly an inflection point. There's a huge opportunity to show you spell sleep. What we
mean, by create a Kik, and we're thinking about this range of valuable cultural and economic activities, that are renting cutting right across the economy, from the deep Tech Solutions. Really, facilitated by technology, but incredibly exciting, as real significant impact investment and Racine at The Incredibles Creative Kids making Play the last four years and we've had to create a check, is really generating jobs for the future. And this is just the beginning
would be achieved in this space. The UK has all the ingredients. It needs to accelerate the growth of crazy amazing. Stakeholders with the creative Industries Council evidence-based. I don't think so. Yes, just to ask her what Joe said that he had his great privilege working on this report. I ready for highlighting and bringing to light. The opportunities. All we've been created over slavery is staying the amount of this investment has gone into it and the job, the job
opportunity than the opportunity that will emerge from now, on from the greatest space. Generally want to say the main or the main learning as well from this. And I'm looking at the date, are looking at the start of the kids. They called it is really the opportunity to educate more young people around in space, without being sure that we are driving crazy check for within the right way. Exactly. Thank you so much for that. Thank, you know, I'm coming to the end of my affection. I want to remind you all that to find out all of the detail about this report.
Go to the tech Nation website and look for the created before you'll find the contact the background and explanation of how the research was conducted and the methodology that we've talked to buy it today and more and we look forward to putting this into action in the years ahead. And we look forward to working with any of you who wants to be part of this movement, has George gold it to join with us in making this fantastic roast Project work for the UK. Thanks very much for your time and back to you, Christine.
Thank you, Janet. Thank you. Also to Diana and to George School, really fantastic inside. So brilliant to have some dates on some evidence that can underpin the decisions policy decisions and just puked you thinking for businesses in Ennis, Texas. I mean, 22% increase in investment 50% in Greece. What a wonderful climate is 450 g sensor and give us something new and exciting to invent with and to create with. So, please come back and find out what we can do. The transformative power of 5G. Thanks. See you later. See you later.
